Jewels recovered; five held

The district police on Wednesday cracked the jewellery shop burglary case of Chellampatti by arresting five persons. They recovered over 182 sovereigns of gold jewels and five kg of silver.

Talking to reporters at Chekkanoorani police station near here on Wednesday, the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police (Madurai Range), Sandeep Mittal, said special teams formed to probe the May 5 heist arrested three persons, including brothers, R. Karuppaiah and R. Singam (37) of Othaveedu in the small hours of Wednesday.

Based on their confession, the police arrested two others and recovered valuables worth Rs. 30 lakh. Mr. Mittal appreciated the Madurai Superintendent of Police, M. Manohar, Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime), A. Myilvaganan, and others for solving the burglary case in quick time.

The police recovered five sovereigns of gold chain stolen in Valandur and Rs. 14,000 lifted from a fertilizer shop in Chellampatti from the accused.

The DIG said that Karuppaiah was involved in 15 theft and burglary cases in Madurai and other neighbouring districts. Karuppaiah had got out of the prison just few days back before striking at the jewellery shop.

Mr. Mittal advised the jewellers to go for closed circuit television cameras with intrusion detection system. “These things are now available at a cheaper rate. It would alert the nearest police station, the shop owners and at least two other telephone/ mobile numbers in case of any intrusion into the shop,” he said.

The Superintendent of Police denied that there was any ceiling on fuel for official vehicle for patrolling by policemen and officers to check crime.

Following recent attacks on policemen, the DIG said that sufficient arms were available in all police stations and police personnel in all ranks were asked to take them whenever they wanted them. “We have instructed the Inspectors and Sub-Inspectors to always carry their personal arms and I have personally checked this practice,” he added.
